Green has been the buzz in New Orleans building since Hurricane Katrina wiped out much of the existing housing stock and shined a new spotlight on the city's ecological vulnerability. Despite growing interest, one significant impediment to green building locally has historically been a dearth of green building supplies, an issue highlighted in a recent Sierra Club report on green building in the Crescent City.

Opus Northwest Management, AMO, achieved a first for Minnesota when its Crescent Ridge Corporate Center I in Minnetonka, MN, received the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design for Existing Buildings (LEED-EB) Gold certification for a multi-tenant building from the US Green Building Council. Crescent Ridge Corporate Center I emits 50% less carbon emissions than standard buildings and is the first multi-tenant property in Minnesota to receive LEED-EB. Meanwhile, CB Richard Ellis, AMO has been awarded the US Environmental Protection Agency 2009 Partner of the Year Award for the second year in a row.

KIRKUK, Iraq -- Election posters in Arabic and Kurdish plaster nearly every wall here. Honking carloads of cheering young men wave Kurdish flags of green, red and white stripes and a yellow sun. Blue and white- crescent flags of the Turkman party hang over some streets. Cell phones ring with pre-paid campaign text messages.

Just as Doctor John croons in his tribute to the Crescent City, it's "sweet home, New Orleans" for lifelong resident Robert L. Green Sr. This weekend, he slept on a bed in his own home in the Lower 9th Ward for the first time in the four years since Hurricane Katrina flattened his neighborhood and killed both his mother and infant granddaughter.
