A recent newspaper indicated a statement from Sen. John McCain that things were improving in Iraq and expressed confidence in America's success in Iraq. President Bush made a similar statement a few days before that. The same newspaper indicated that the green zone in Baghdad, which is the most fortified area of any part of Iraq and which contains the American Embassy, was under continuous attack by insurgents who were firing rockets repeatedly into the green zone. The article indicated that American soldiers had been killed and other people injured in the green zone from the rocket attacks.
The most protected part of Iraq, which contains the American Embassy and which also contains the Iraqi government and governmental leaders, is under continuous rocket attack from insurgent groups.

BAGHDAD, Iraq -- An explosion by a mortar or rocket wounded five U.S. Embassy contractors Tuesday in the heavily fortified Green Zone, fueling concerns that the area is no longer a haven from Iraq's chaos.
The attack came while American-led forces continued to search for three soldiers who've been missing since their two-Humvee patrol was ambushed Saturday in a violent area south of Baghdad. U.S. officials said American forces had seized several suspected insurgents but had found no trace of the missing men.

BAGHDAD - Two car bombs exploded Monday evening in the Iraqi capital and killed at least 16 people, authorities said. At least one appeared to target Shiite pilgrims, sinking the country deeper into a new wave of sectarian violence.
The second car bomb struck near a police vehicle in the Shiite neighborhood of al-Shaab, killing three policemen and four other people, police and hospital officials said. Earlier in the day, a roadside bomb killed two Shiite pilgrims in a Baghdad suburb. The attacks were the latest in a wave of violence primarily targeting Shiites that has killed more than 90 people in less than a week.

According to Public Affairs Officer, Lieutenant Darryl Frost, "The Green Zone" is more than just a movie. For many soldiers it's an account of what occurred in Iraq's 5.6 square-mile International Zone commonly referred to as "The Green Zone." The area was the center of the Coalition Provisional Authority and remains the center of the international presence in the city.
Today, International Zone (IZ) is the term Iraqis prefer to use. "A lot of Iraq's administrators are here -the heart of the government of Iraq is here. It denotes that security is a lot better. You don't have a Green or a Red Zone anymore, it's all International zone and the rest of Baghdad outside of it," said Lt. Frost.
This is great because the Iraqis are stepping up and they see that the U.S. forces are moving out o...

One embedded journalist described the batallion's pre-invasion intelligence briefing this way: "They told the men that the enemy--Fedayeen--would be dressed in black and that they flew green and white flags. We didn't have translators and there was only one man in the entire battalion who spoke Arabic. We entered through the south and absolutely everyone was wearing black. They were on rooftops and in doorways. One soldier yelled through the radio that we were surrounded and asked for permission to open fire. Luckily, a levelheaded commander thought something was wrong and told him to hold fire unless fired upon. I finally took the commander aside and said, 'Look, I don't know a lot about this area, but I do know that black is the color of Shiites and green is the color of Islam'. The c...

BAGHDAD - Iraq's labor minister escaped assassination Thursday when a suicide bomber rammed an explosives-laden sport-utility vehicle into his convoy, killing at least nine people in one of the safest areas of the capital.
The bomber drove his Toyota Land Cruiser into the convoy carrying Labor and Social Affairs Minister Mahmoud Mohammed al-Radhi as it passed near Tahrir Square in the busy Bab al-Sharji market area - not far from the U.S.-protected Green Zone.

[Ray Curry], a wiry, intense guy, had been flailing around since his discharge from the Marines in 2005. He'd done some volunteer work, but mostly he bartended in the D. C. area. "I went through three years of self-destructive cycles," he recalled. "A lot of veterans struggle in civilian jobs. It doesn't always pan out. I had authority struggles, some post-traumatic stress. I went from being a leader in the Marines to working in bars in subservient and pointless jobs. It pays the bills but it's not fulfilling." Veterans Green Jobs appeared at the right time. "Veterans believe in service," said Curry. "That's why they enlisted in the first place. But they aren't really serving these days. They need to receive services. This is a way of employing us and getting into career paths.
