The 20th century was a time of great and terrible revolutions. The Russian Revolution of 1917 promised a communist utopia. It delivered man-made famines, the Gulag Archipelago and at least 20 million murdered. The Chinese Revolution of 1949 brought the Great Leap Forward and the Great Proletarian Cultural Revolution; estimates put the death toll as high as 65 million.
Thirty years ago, on Feb. 1, 1979, the Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini led the Iranian Revolution. Like the Russian and Chinese revolutions, it promised a global conflict leading to a new era of justice. But unlike those earlier revolutions, it would be not the proletariat bringing down the capitalists, but the Muslims rising up against the "infidels" - their power, values, laws, and their seductively satanic way of life.

Many reading this probably don't know it, but at 1 pm Monday afternoon, the Pentagon will host a "Welcome home" ceremony for Vietnam War veterans at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial on the Mall. If it comes off, it will be a good thing. A lot of very brave men fought nobly in that conflict, only to return home to be treated with scorn and disrespect. (I still remember my own reception while out-processing at Oakland Army Base in California following my second Vietnam tour, when we were warned, "Don't wear your uniforms into town.")
As we honor the fine men (and some greatly appreciated women) who served in Vietnam on this Memorial Day, it may be time to reassess the conventional wisdom that led Congress in 1973 to betray their sacrifice and caused generations since to believe the Vietnam W...

In early 1957, during the short-lived "Hundred Flowers" movement of intellectual liberalization, the author, then a brash twenty-two-year-old artist, published "On Beauty," an essay severely critical of the orthodox Marxist-Maoist idea that art should be judged by purely objective standards. After release in 1962, his training helped him find a position at an institute at Dunhuang on the old Silk Road, where the desert climate has helped preserve an extraordinary array of paintings, sculptures, and other cultural relics spanning the millenium from the fourth through the fourteenth centuries.

Sixty years ago, on Oct. 1, 1949, Mao Zedong, chairman of the Central People's Government, stood at Tiananmen Square in the Capitol City of Beijing and proclaimed the founding of the People's Republic of China. The world has not been the same since.
After his death, [Deng Xiaoping] quoted [Mao] as admitting that he was "70 percent right, 30 percent wrong." Deng only looked backwards long enough to set a new course for China's future.
Deng Xiaoping, a contemporary of Mao's, was also tormented by his whims during the various "movements" that led to China's rise.
