  • Theres been a great run in pop culture, lately, for zombies of all kinds. But Battle Ground school leaders dont want to see them in classrooms every day. So, theyve agreed to push school start times back 30 minutes for the upcoming school year, the district has announced.

  • There will be huge crowds this Sunday when the city becomes witness to one of the more competitive marathons in recent memory. Crete Wami, of Ethiopia, emerges as a favorite due to her close finish with Paula Radcliffe of Great Britain in last year's run. Radcliffe, who has nursed injuries all year, will be competitive, but probably not at her best. American Kara Goucher is a sleeper pick to dominate the women's portion of the race. She's the only runner participating on Sunday who's undefeated versus Radcliffe (her last victory against Radcliffe came September 2007 at the BUPA Great North Run). The Top Five Moments in New York Road Runners History, a week-long fan poll, will lead up to this Sunday's 2008 ING New York City Marathon.

  • Kara Goucher has talked about it for a while now, but it appears she will step up to the marathon distance with a debut at the Nov. 2 New York City Marathon. It became apparent that Goucher's career was headed in the 26.2- mile direction last fall when she impressed with a 1:06:57 half marathon to win the Great North Run in England, defeating Paula Radcliffe in Radcliffe's first race back from her pregnancy. In the process, she posted a time some 37 seconds faster than Deena Kastor's U.S. record (the course for Great North is not record eligible).

  • North Allegheny senior Logan Steiner picked a great time to run his best. Steiner has won his past two races -- the Tri-State Coaches Invitational two weeks ago and the WPIAL Class AAA meet last week -- on the muddy course at Cooper's Lake Campground. On Saturday, he'll try to cap his impressive run at the PIAA meet in Hershey.

  • Cache Valley is a land flowing with milk and honey. You can taste it at the local dairies and food factories and see bees working in a hive at Cox Honeyland. At Gossner Foods and Pepperidge Farm, you can nibble free samples or buy discounted "seconds." Bluebird Chocolates and Aggie Ice Cream offer sweet nostalgia for former Utah State University students. The Cache Valley Visitors Bureau has even made up a list of some of these food finds for tour groups (www.tourcachevalley.com). Summer is a great time for a food run. The weather's a little cooler up north, and you may already be headed to the Festival of the American West, Utah Festival Opera or Bear Lake. On the way home, you can stop at the roadside stands dotting U.S. 89 between Brigham City and Willard (also known as the Fruitway)...

  • Brennan McGovern sits quietly, observing the organized chaos around him. A Franklin Park junior council member, McGovern, 17, listens to discussions about garbage collection and other issues. He wants to learn more about how his community is run. It's a great opportunity to learn about local government," said McGovern, a senior at North Allegheny Senior High School. "Seeing on a consistent basis the whole process of how laws get enacted is a great experience.

  • TURNER - The Leavitt Are High School cross Country team hosted the inaugural Leavitt Cross Country Father's Day 5K Sunday. It was a great start for an annual event, particularly for a Father's Day run north of Portland. The top male finisher was Mike Mosca with a time of 17:58. Beryle Martin led the women's division with a time of 22:54. Age category winners were Rylee Knox and Olivia Mallar, Keith Lemelin and Natasha Smith, Mosca, Billy Nicols and Martin, and Ronald Chase. There was an excellent showing of runners from the Maine Track Club and the Leavitt team and the local community. The youngest to run was 12, and the oldest runner was 69. Coach Ralph Fletcher, a race organizer in his own right, showed up and ran as well.

  • RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - The remnants of Tropical Storm Ernesto put a sloppy wet damper on the last big tourism weekend of the summer for many people, making a mess of some oceanfront hotels and leaving beaches and boardwalks less crowded than usual. Ernesto was reduced to an area of rain over western New York state and the lower Great Lakes by Saturday afternoon, after drenching Virginia and North Carolina with up to a foot on its run up the East Coast.
