  • This study explores price dynamics and price relationships in the US housing market with a focus on four regions: Northeast, Midwest, South, and West. It applies a multivariate state-space model to identify the common trends and common cycles in US regional markets. The study finds that the principal source of secular price variability in the Northeast and West markets is due to two common stochastic trends, while a large share of transitional price variability in the Northeast, West and Midwest originates from three common stochastic cycles. The study estimates the relationships between the common unobserved components and economic variables and finds that unemployment, federal funds rate, corporate default risk, economic expansion, unanticipated inflation in the construction market ar...

  • YEARS AGO, the managing editor of a Midwest newspaper for which I was conducting a writing workshop confided that he'd recently banned a certain usage in his newspaper and that the newsroom staff had met the ban with resistance and hostility. To be active, that passage might read: "The creator of the human race made its beings equal and endowed them with certain unalienable rights ... among them life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

  • This study compares Google News to LexisNexis for finding stories in the New York Times, eight large-circulation U.S. newspapers, and all English-language news outlets in each database. Inter-database agreement between Google News and LexisNexis ranged from 29% to 83%, with much of the discrepancy due to wire service exclusions: LexisNexis missed half or more of stories appearing in major papers and in broad searches of English-language news because it is blind to wire stories. Wire-service blind spots in news archives can be a substantial limitation.

  • School districts use a variety of professional development initiatives, many of them successfully. Unfortunately, teachers often return to their previous ways of teaching soon after the initiatives are over. Consequently, sustaining or growing the results of these initiatives is challenging. This case study examines one Mid-western metropolitan school district's professional development coaching initiative through the eyes of four coaches who described their roles as coaches, the perceived success of the initiative, and their perceptions of what was needed to sustain that success after returning to their classrooms. Data were gathered via survey, documents provided by the district administration, and individual interviews with the coaches. Results indicated that coaches felt there was a...
