WINFIELD - For the second year running, Putnam County Schools has been awarded a state Innovation Zone grant for $100,000 per year for three years, Superintendent Chuck Hatfield told the school board Monday night.
This year's application asked for funding to bring in a career education specialist to work with counselors at all the county's middle and high schools. The money will cover the specialist's salary and other employee costs, as well as provide funding for professional development and resources.

The state Board of Education will take over the Grant County school system in the wake of an audit that found inadequate test scores, graduates who were unprepared for college and a lack of opportunities for high achievers.
The state school board voted unanimously Monday to take over schools in the county after seeing last month's report by the state Department of Education's Office of Education Performance Audits.

LANCASTER, Wis. - The vice chairman of the Grant County Board of Supervisors and the chair of the county's Agriculture, Extension, Education and Fair Committee has decided not to seek re-election next spring.
Don McKelvey, of Lancaster, filed a notification of non- candidacy, according to Grant County Clerk Chris Carl. He has served on the county board since 1982.

LYNDHURST - The Lyndhurst Board of Education has approved a grant of more than $600,000 to cover tuition for special education students.
The school district approved the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act grant last week. The $617,000 grant will cover fees for the 354 special education students who travel outside the district for schooling.

The West Virginia Ethics Commission announced Friday that it has dismissed two ethics complaints against House Education Chairman Jerry Mezzatesta.
The complaints had accused Mezzatesta of soliciting a $70,000 state grant for his employer, the Hampshire County Board of Education, and receiving his county pay while serving in the Legislature.

MADISON - Reports of a hostile and unsafe school environment have prompted the state to seize control of a technical center in Grant County.
The state Board of Education declared a state of emergency at the South Branch Career and Technical Center on Wednesday and gave oversight of the school to state Superintendent Steve Paine. South Branch previously was overseen by a council made up mostly of educators in Grant, Hardy and Pendleton counties.

CHEYENNE -- The future of a proposed charter school in the eastern Laramie County town of Albin is in a judge's hands.
Laramie County District Judge Edward Grant on Friday heard an appeal of a State Board of Education decision. He will issue a decision at a later date.
