According to a poll taken by the GrandParent PoliticsProject, today's grandparents are not all that impressed with politicians.
Fifty, or even 25, years ago, politicians were bigger than life. According to the GrandParent PoliticsProject, when asked, many grandparents admit that as a child they would have been very much impressed had they met a mayor, congressman, a United States senator ... or any elected politician, such as a state legislator, a county commissioner or even a town councilman.

Bob Brick first played the card game bridge during World War II, when he served in the Navy. Nearly 60 years later, the 84-year-old and his wife, Norma, both of Cross Lanes, are members of several different bridge clubs: Men's, Women's, Coed and the Grandparents Bridge Club in Charleston.
We're limited on the things we used to do, on the physical activity. We used to dance a lot so [playing bridge] is another outlet to keep in contact with people," said Bob, a 10-year club member.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are an estimated 70 million grandparents, many of whom play an active role in the lives of their grandchildren.
Former President Jimmy Carter proclaimed the first national observance of Grandparents Day and he joined the ranks of people like comedian Bill Cosby, who once said, "What is it about a grandparent that is so lovely? I'd like to say that grandparents are God's gifts to children. And if they can but see, hear and feel what these people have to give, they can mature at a fast rate.

THANKS to the grandparents: the huggers and spoilers, the "I-did- that-and-you-turned-out-just-fine" sayers, the ones who are raising their grandkids, and those who see them once or twice a year. Grandparents, the best of them, are our children's cheerleaders, their pillars, their partners in crime. And with their life stories, grandparents provide lessons of strength and love for generations yet to unfold.
Someday, Hermine Chang Yap's three grandkids will read the story of "Grandma Yap's" adventure: how she was born of Chinese parents in Kingston, Jamaica, a little over a month before Pearl Harbor; how she grew so indispensable at the family's grocery store that her mother refused to send her to high school (the nuns came and overruled Mama); how at 22, the young bride Hermine and her ...

Question: As grandparents in the middle of their son's divorce, we need some advice on dealing with hurt and anger toward the ex, where to find our place in our ex-daughter-in-law's new life and how to help our son with the kids. We live in the same city, and are hands-on grandparents.
Answer: We understand that you're caring grandparents, but what are you doing in "the middle of your son's divorce?" One of the biggest complaints we hear from divorcing couples is that the in- laws interfere. They are so invested in the grandkids that they are the ones offended if the ex makes a decision about the child. Then, they weigh in on who is right or wrong, and relationships are already strained become even more difficult.

One of the interesting stories told by Justice Clarence Thomas in his best-selling memoir, "My Grandfather's Son," was the relationship between his son, Jamal, and his great-grandfather. As a child, Justice Thomas, in the absence of his father, was raised by his paternal grandfather, who was by all accounts a strict disciplinarian. However, the relationship between the Justice's own son and his great-grandfather was loving, doting and kind. He spoiled his great-grandson to no end, which greatly perplexed the Justice. When he questioned his grandfather about this, his grandfather replied unhesitatingly, "Jamal is not my responsibility." Justice Thomas' relationship with his grandfather provides an interesting insight into the role that grandparents play in the lives of children today.
