Voice, messaging, and other forms of communication can be added as programmable features to any Web page, application, or online community -- a SaaS play in a traditionally hardwired space. • Google has released Google Voice, an application offering a number of features for the telecommunications space. The service, out since mid-March, allows users to place domestic calls for free from a PC, place low-cost calls internationally, switch phones during a call, record conversations, share voice-mail, and transcribe voicemail to email or text with automatic speech recognition technology. The launch of Google Voice is another sign that the company is serious about making a name for itself in the telecommunications space. Google is in a good position to capitalize on new opportunities in the voicemail-to-text space without having to rely as heavily on channels and possibly introducing a free service that is monetized through ad support.

  • [...] lately it seems that people are less interested in connecting with information than they are with connecting to one another, which begs the question, "Is Facebook the new Google?" Anecdotal evidence of a shift in user behavior has been mounting for years, but now it has been substantiated by internet traffic analysis data, which suggests for the first time that the social networking site Facebook receives more internet traffic in the U.S. than any other destination on the web, including Google. [...] while the margin remains relatively small (Facebook's 7.07% to Google's 7.03% of total traffic), it is likely to widen as Facebook's traffic continues to grow a staggering 185% a year compared to Google's 9% growth in 2009. According to the Google Voice privacy policy, Google Voice ...
