In February, Telma Valdez, who has lived in the United States for almost 22 years, and her son, Luis Valdez, a college student at Grand Rapids Community College who was bom in the U.S., drove to the home of relatives to allow their 6-year-old cousin to play with Luis's new puppy. As they pulled the car into the driveway, unidentified ICE agents ran toward them. An agent pointed a gun at Luis and ordered him to show ID. Both Luis and Telma produced their valid driver's license and ICE agents demanded that they get out of the car.

Marygrove College invites the public to participate in an interactive arts exhibition featuring haikus written about the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. People are encouraged to view the exhibit and then respond to poet [Mursalata Muhammad] Muhammad on her blog's Web page located at www.haikumiddllepassageexhibit.blogspot.com. Responses can be musical, written, visual or performing.
There will be a reception on Feb. 21 from 3 to 6 p.m. In the fall of 2006, poet Mursalata Muhammad, an associate professor of English at Grand Rapids Community College, made an open e-mail call for visual artists and musicians to select one of the haikus in her collection for interpretation.
