  • Bangor at risk I was amused to see a recent visitor from New York City look on in shock at a new work of "urban folk art" defacing a building on Main Street in Bangor. She turned to me and said, "People here just don't realize how dangerous graffiti is. In New York, when we see graffiti, we know we are going to lose the neighborhood.

  • LOS ANGELES - Not so long ago, Cristian Gheorghiu roamed the streets of Los Angeles at all hours, black marker in his pocket, hunting for walls and street signs where he could scrawl his graffiti moniker, "Smear. These days, he's working in his garage, splashed in paint and surrounded by canvases, paint cans, markers and odds and ends he uses to fashion abstract mixed-media artworks, which have been exhibited in galleries from California to Europe, fetching up to a couple thousand dollars.

For example, in Escondido, Graffiti Tracker showed that one tagger was responsible for a series of markings along a particular street on the way to a local school. Last week, Escondido police announced that they had used Graffiti Tracker again to help arrest a tagger suspected of causing an estimated $50,000 in damages. Currently, only three jurisdictions, Escondido, Oceanside and the County Sheriff's Department, use Graffiti Tracker. • CLARKSBURG - Only within the past six months has Clarksburg resident Jaeson Parsons been able to talk about the bodies he saw as a combat medic in Iraq. Often, it was those of the living who were most haunting. Some of the people he treated were badly burned. Others he received in pieces. Of the wounds he evaluated, many belonged to children.

  • KETTERING -- Police said they expected two Kettering teens to turn themselves in this week after profane and racist graffiti was spray-painted on Oakview Elementary School twice last month. School officials found the graffiti on the rear of the building after the April 30-May 1 weekend, and again on the morning of May 6, and have been able to sandblast much of it away. A nearby resident's garage door also was spray-painted with profanity. Kettering police officer Michael Burke said investigation led to the teens and police have spoken with their parents.
