Seven area campuses are poised to send off thousands of college graduates throughout May, nearly 3,500 alone from Illinois State University.
The first ceremony was Sunday when Illinois Wesleyan University celebrated its 161st commencement on the campus quad, with nearly 460 graduates. IWU also awarded keynote speaker, poet Linda Gregerson, an honorary degree. Gregerson, whose book "Magnetic North" was a National Book Award finalist in 2007, had a daughter is in the graduating class. Another honorary degree went to Emmy-award winning documentary filmmaker Almudena Carracedo.

In more than 30 years the Redlands Adult School's nursing program has trained more than 1,000 vocational nurses who work in local hospitals and other care facilities.
Joining this group is the class of 2011A, who graduated recently in a ceremony at the Blackhawk Theatre at Citrus Valley High School.

Northwest Mississippi Community College president Dr. Gary Lee Spears announced Mississippi Rep. Kelvin Buck of Holly Springs and Brent Warren of Senatobia will serve as speakers for the two graduation ceremonies May 13 in Howard Coliseum on the Senatobia campus. Warren will speak at the 10 a.m. ceremony for Career Certificate and Associate of Applied Science graduates, and Buck will speak at the 2 p.m. ceremony for Associate of Arts graduates.
Buck has served in the Mississippi House of Representatives since 2004 and is a graduate of Rust College with a bachelor's in mass communication and broadcast journalism.
