BLOOMINGTON - A new pilot election law approved in July is costing McLean County and the Bloomington Election Commission more than $7,700. The law, effective until March 2, requires election authorities to offer grace period registration and early voting at all public universities.

To get their proposal on the ballot, petitioners need at least 4,487 valid signatures. On July 14, they submitted 5,110 signatures. But the City Clerk's Office found only 4,224 were valid.

SPRINGFIELD College students in Illinois would get an extra chance to vote in elections under legislation that gained early approval from lawmakers Wednesday. A Senate committee voted 7-2 to endorse a measure that would require county clerks to conduct early voting, grace period registration and grace period voting on state campuses.
