A core group of 34 government employees continued to earn massive overtime payments -- all seeing their income boosted by at least $160,000 over three years -- even as the state scaled back such expenses, records show.
Overall, OT payments to state employees declined last year to $242 million -- proof, budget officials say, that Governor Corzine is cutting costs. The payments were 3.5 percent less than in 2007.

A group of unions representing teachers and other government employees is suing the state over increased employee contributions to the Arizona State Retirement System.
The Arizona Education Association; American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees; and American Federation of Teachers filed suit today over a provision in the fiscal 2012 budget that raised state employees' share of their retirement contributions from 50- to 53 percent. The unions argued it is unconstitutional to apply the new formula to current employees because it violates two provisions of the Arizona Constitution dealing with contracts and the state retirement system

The Supreme Court on Wednesday unanimously upheld the federal government's ability to conduct background security checks of contracted employees, ruling against a group of NASA-contracted scientists and engineers who had challenged the agency's drug- screening process on privacy grounds.
Two justices went so far as to say that such a privacy right does not exist.

It's a good deed that has been lost in a semantical debate, but it was encouraging to see that a group of government employees understands the need to share the pain with taxpayers who have grappled with recent economic struggles.

LARAMIE, Wyo. - An environmental group that advocates on behalf of government employees worries anti-government rhetoric fueled a surge in attacks and threats last year against law enforcement rangers in national parks.
The group Public Employees for Environmental Responsibility said it used the Freedom of Information Act to compile a list of 158 threats and attacks against law enforcement rangers in national parks in 2009. That's up from 36 tallied in 2008 and the previous high of 111 in 2004.
