A Portland man faces as much as 15 years in prison and deportation back to his native Antigua on charges that he stole another man's identity, then obtained $250,000 in government housing, medical, food and education benefits reserved for U.S. citizens. Besouro Abdul Zagon, 52, was charged Monday in U.S. District Court on a 30-count indictment accusing him of, among other things, theft, identity theft and impersonating a U.S. citizen to gain federal benefits.
PORTLAND, Maine -- A South Paris couple was sentenced Monday in U.S. District Court to five years of probation for fraudulently receiving more than $119,000 in government benefits. William Stella, 58, and Linda Stella, 68, waived indictment and pleaded guilty in May to conspiracy to defraud the government between October 2002 and December 2008.
A federal grand jury in Charleston indicted eight people Wednesday, including four people on charges that they stole government benefits, the U.S. Attorney's Office announced. Robin Sinkhorn, 39, of Oak Hill, allegedly collected Social Security benefits that were due to her mother for more than a year after her mother died, thereby misappropriating almost $21,000, according to the indictment. If convicted, Sinkhorn faces up to 10 years in prison.

The advantages and costs of government-mandated employee benefits are considered. Specifically, the standard utility maximization framework is extended to characterize employer reactions to mandates. The results revealed five possible responses, one of which is the reduction of non-mandated compensation. Due to this, the impact on workers of company decisions to lower wages to offset higher benefit costs is also explored.
