If the Dubuque Hempstead girls swimming and diving team needed a catchy theme song to a breakthrough season, it might as well have been "Let the Good Times Roll.
The Mustangs not only re-wrote the school's record board, they had plenty of fun doing it.

Sub-prime mortgages are disasters waiting to happen. They cut around the rules and lure you in with cheap upfront payments. Soon the reality will set in. The costs will soar and your income will not. You will find yourself in a trap and the only way out is to "give up". Then your credit history will be a disaster and you aren't going to qualify for any kind of mortgage for more than a decade.
His staff tells me that the main points they are considering are: 1. Clarify mortgage brokers' fiduciary duty to borrowers; 2. Expand protections (including yield spread premiums) for those who assume high-cost loans under HOEPA (Home Ownership & Equity Protection Act); 3. Ban balloon payments and prepayment penalties for high-cost loans; 4. Prohibit loan originators from steering borrowers to ...

If you go What: Steve Martin and the Steep Canyon Rangers When: 8 p.m. Friday Where: Clay Center Tickets: $27.50 to $57.50 Info: www.theclaycenter.org or 304-561-3570
Hes likely best remembered as a Wild and Crazy Guy or Navin Johnson in The Jerk, but when Steve Martin rolls into Charleston on Friday for his performance at the Clay Center, those personas will give way to Martins latest creative venture: playing banjo with the renowned bluegrass troupe, The Steep Canyon Rangers. A household name in most of America, Martin built his early career as a stand- up comedian before making the transition to the screen. As a regular guest on Saturday Night Live, he later had memorable roles in films such as Three Amigos and Roxanne. But even his exceptional talent in comedy and acting failed to d...

PHONTE COLEMAN: Oh, Jesus. [Laughs.] Well, I saw 'em live once. I was in seventh grade ... the Greensboro Coliseum. It was the tour with Boyz II Men, Jodeci and Hammer as the headliner. They did a good job. ... At the time, when this came out, I really did like the song, but now-I find with a lot of Babyface stuff-the syrup is just a little too thick. They're some good memories to this. This wasn't even the coldest song on the album, though. I wasn't even fucking with this one. The shit was "50 Candles." That was the ballad on that album. I used to get it in doing phonebone off of "50 Candles." But this shit here, they played it on the radio too much. I used to hear it a million times, and I was just like, "If y"all never play this shit again, it'll be too soon.

In my research I've discovered that 'The Girl from Ipanema" rivals the Beatles' "Yesterday" in terms of how many people who have covered it. A song like that sounds simple but there's some really interesting stuff harmonically going on in it: kind of strange chords, and a pretty highly developed logic. It's not the three-chord theme of rock'n'roll at all, and it's a little different from American jazz.
When you choose a venue like Jazz Central, it's going to be somewhat self-selecting. It's not like I'm doing it at Shifty's, where I would expect beer bottles to be thrown at me if they didn't like it. I haven't thought of myself as a high-brow musician, but I guess it's kind of specialized what I'm doing.
I'm calling the show "Black Beans and Pink Popcorn" for a very good reason, not jus...

I learned to be a tastemaker because of him," says Ahmir "?uestlove" Thompson of AM's fearlessness. "He'd mix 2 Live Crew's 'Get It Girl' with Ray Charles. He'd play The Golden Girls theme with Daft Punk. Seriously, absolutely a maniac.
"DJs have become robotic pussies," says ?uestlove, with apologies to his mother, who hates it when he curses in the press. "They've become so timid and afraid to alienate these sheep on the dancefloor, and are only concerned with looking good and being the center of attention. They will play something even if they personally don't like the song. I've been the victim of this pressure a few times, but mostly I pull out my inner Larry Levan and grab mofos by the throat and force them to see it my way. That's what you paying me for, right?"
