If you were anywhere near the University of Baltimore School of Law last week, you probably heard a great sigh of relief from administrators, faculty, staff and students alike. The seemingly endless war between the law school and the university over funding finally came to an end with an unprecedented negotiated settlement. The settlement, approved by University President Robert L. Bogomolny and Law School Interim Dean F. Michael Higginbotham, was overwhelmingly ratified by the law school faculty and heartily endorsed by the Student Bar Association.
We want to add our congratulations to UB for the substance of the settlement and the process through which it was reached. If ever there was an example of good lawyers, acting in good faith, achieving a good outcome, this was it. With a bran...

Down here on the ground, all hopes I or anyone else had for a healing of the divide evaporated last week when [Freman Hendrix] made a surprise announcement, surrounded by gleeful supporters, that he was requesting a recount. Even though he lost by more than 14,000 votes (53 percent to 46 percent), which is not considered a close election, and even though the bill for this recount will cost the taxpayers of Detroit $600,000, Hendrix no longer feels like rallying behind the mayor for the sake of the city - at least not yet. Instead, the best way to serve the citizens of Detroit is apparently to preserve the integrity of the election by assuring his supporters that he really did lose the race. I don't think those who supported [Kwame Kilpatrick] have any problem believing the outcome so, f...

Most of these studies rely on a sleight of hand: they substitute "trade," a performance variable that reflects multiple factors (usually measured as the sum of exports and imports over Gross Domestic Product), for the policy variable "trade openness" (typically measured by tariff and non-tariff barriers to trade). For them, the evidence from Sachs and Warner's paper, "Economic Reform and the Process of Global Integration," settles the intellectual argument that an "open-door policy" is the key to fast economic growth in today's global economy. Economists Joel Slemrod and Jon Bakija, in their respected primer on tax policy, Taxing Ourselves, report that "sophisticated statistical analyses of the relationship between economic growth and the level of taxation, which attempt to hold const...

Last weekend, I picked the first tomatoes of the season from our little vegetable garden out back. It felt like an eternity before the fruit on those massive plants finally ripened; now all of a sudden, the garden is littered with bright red tomatoes. I spent the weekend tossing them in with salads and grilling thick slices with a little salt and cracked pepper, fixing tomato 'n' mayo sandwiches and toasting the summer's bounty with Bloody Marys.
Of course, even though it's been less than a week since I picked the first tomato, I've already realized I'll have to be more creative in the kitchen or that summer bounty will turn into a curse. So I decided to experiment. With confit.

Expressing thanks may be one of the simplest ways to feel better.
The Thanksgiving holiday began, as the name implies, when the colonists gave thanks for their survival and for a good harvest. So perhaps November is a good time to review the mental health benefits of gratitude -- and to consider some advice about how to cultivate this state of mind.
