This paper compares two methods of examining the entry choice of professional golfers, focusing on the size of the purse, the strength of the competition, and a newly constructed variable, the match of the player's skills with the skills rewarded at each tournament, while controlling for some dynamic factors such as year end pushes to cross relative earnings thresholds. Logit regressions are one method of examining the entry choice. A second method exploits combinatorial arithmetic. Choosing which n of N tournaments to play is equivalent to choosing n balls without replacement from an urn with N balls. The results show that golfers choose tournaments with higher purses, with a better skills match, and when the competition is fiercest.

Australian golf officials support a new OneAsia Super Series, which has divided opinion in the region, because the schedule will likely involve about 20 tournaments by 2011, each offering at least $1.5 million in prize money. "It's a platform that will sit above and complement the regional tours," commissioner Ben Sellenger of the Australian PGA Tour said. "It will give the players from all the bodies involved the chance to compete on a tour that's a genuine alternative to the (U.S.) PGA and European tours. The 2011 OneAsia schedule will take in tournaments from the Australasian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese tours and become the world's third-largest golf tour.

Another professional golf tour is headed to the Pittsburgh area for the 2010 season. Officials from the PGA Tour and Southpointe Golf Club will announce at 10 a.m. today that the Nationwide Tour is making a stop in Western Pennsylvania either in late August or early September.

Rick Wigginton and Lamont Ellison want their golf tour to be as much like the PGA Tour as possible. They are the co-directors of the Indiana/Western Kentucky Amateur Golf Tour, which plays by U.S. Golf Association rules and is in its sixth year, has 14 tournaments and has a point system that tracks individual performances.
