Development has already begun on the Rivers to Ridges Heritage Trail, Project Coordinator Lowell Wilks told Putnam Rotarians Dec. 7. Some 80 miles in length, the trail will extend along the Kanawha River from Nitro to Point Pleasant, following State Route 62. The trail will then cross the Kanawha at its mouth and follow old U.S. 35 back upriver. The trail project was undertaken in response to a growing interest in cultural and heritage tourism. It will promote and support economic activity in an area rich in history and tradition, Wilks told the group. Route 62 follows a trail blazed by the Greenbrier militia on their way to the Battle of Point Pleasant in 1774. (The militia march and battle opened the Kanawha Valley to white settlement.)
