I have a 6-month-old golden retriever named Baron. He whines and barks for food whenever the family sits down to eat. To my knowledge, he has never been given any food from the table. I would like to keep him around while we eat rather than locking him up elsewhere in the house, but his noise disrupts meals that would otherwise be peaceful. Any suggestions?
You can teach Baron a command called "Go to your place" or just "Place" to correct this behavior. Start by thinking about what you want your dog to do, not what you don't want him to do. Telling Baron "No! Stop begging!" addresses only the bad behavior and most of the time will not work. What you really want to do is to train Baron to go to a certain place and sit quietly while you and your family eat. Here's how to do it.

Wanda Grooms, who is a greeter at Dayton First Church of the Nazarene, but lives in Union, was the first person to offer a hand to the lost dog, when the golden retriever climbed the steps of the church in the Burgess and North Main streets area.
When things quieted down I took the lost dog to an animal shelter to have her checked for a microchip," Wanda said.
