FARMINGTON -- The Gold LEAF Institute Senior College will host their spring open house from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, March 3, in the North Dining Hall in the Student Center at the University of Maine at Farmington. A variety of classes from bird calling to recognizing the early signs of Alzheimer's are listed among the spring course offerings. Participants can sign up during the open house, said Sara Wing, a UMF work-study student assigned to work in the Gold LEAF office.

Picture frames were very elaborate during Victorian times. The rectangular frame for an oil painting could be 3 or 4 inches deep with several different types of carving on the borders. And the frame often was covered with gold leaf. Small frames were sometimes made of carved pieces of dark wood joined in a crisscross fashion.

Gold LEAF is an organization offering learning opportunities to members age 50 or older and their spouse or partner, regardless of age. The $30 annual membership fee gives the opportunity to take courses at any of the 16 senior colleges in Maine.
