  • Ten years ago, I was the president of the New York Board of Rabbis. In that capacity, I was asked to deliver the Jewish prayer during the Prayer for America service at Yankee Stadium Sept. 24, 2001. I present a portion of it here. I was broken then, and though I'm stronger at the broken places now, I still remember the power of the collective sense of grief, anger and fear that gripped us all. On that day, we thought 6,000 people had died. Other than that, I still believe every word I spoke. May God bless all the mourners of 9/11, and may God bless America. -- Marc

  • Thousands of people gathered at the Civic Center on Sunday for the God Bless America Rally to remember the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Carolyn Tinney, of St. Albans, whose husband was in the military, attended the rally to show her patriotism. Baptist churches in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky organized the event.

  • These are quaint and harmless enough people in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and in a dozen or so other locations around the country that welcome the Amish to live, grow and pray. They do not drink or smoke. Their favorite mode of transportation, and sometimes only mode of transportation, is by horse and wagon. Men and women and children till the land, harvest the crops and pray on their designated day. They operate their own schools and they do not believe in doctors or the practice of medicine. They are generally healthy people who do not wish to blend with the general population. They want to live, work and grow amongst their own. They came to America generations ago to establish homesteads and for the most part remained in these communities where the land was rich and they could gr...

  • Risk also helped [Billy Sugarfix] set up the "Song-a-Day" podcasts when, from July to November in 2005, he posted a new song for 100 straight days, a real testament to his proflicacy. "A lot of friends would say, ? always thought it'd be fun to write a song about this or that,'" he says. "I'd say, 'Let's do it. Finish your beer.' This is essentially how Billy and I - Americans, united, tight bros from way back when, you know - came to collaborate on "The Ballad of [Joey "Jaws" Chestnut] 'Jaws' Chestnut," an American idol in the making. The song is a triple feat: a celebration of Chestnut's potential triumph, Evil Wiener's annual roast and, of course, Lady Liberty (who just loves hot dogs). To hear "The Bailad of Joey 'Jaws' Chestnut," visit www.indyweek.com or go out to the Evil Wiener...

  • God Bless America. We've all heard this song, made famous by Kate Smith. As I sang this song on the 4th of July, I wondered, "Why?" When we've kicked the Ten Commandments out of the schools in 1964, when we've had case after case taking down crosses and prohibiting Christian references from government activities, and we've elected a President that shunned a Christian day of prayer because he didn't want to "offend" anyone but went to a Muslim group.

  • Freedom isn't free. Never has been, never will be. Very special warriors have provided freedom at supreme sacrifice since time immemorial. Good people will never forget, and we celebrate Memorial Day with a hard-charging spirit in appreciation for hard-charging warriors. With his lifeblood pouring out of him from a mortal RPG wound to center mass, Pvt. 1st Class Todd Balding from Texas was, on the surface, but a bundle of red gauze and bandages, a jumble of tubes and numerous electronic apparatus beeping away. He was surrounded by a dedicated team of U.S. military medical experts at the Landstuhl hospital in Germany doing everything in their power to save the young American's life.

  • Do they say "God Bless America" simply because it's patriotic? Do they say it in the arrogant American belief that we're privileged to God's blessings hi ways the rest of the world is not? And more importantly, in their urging that "God Bless America," do they ever give thought to how they themselves are blessing God? As America transforms itself into a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah, the phrase "One Nation Under God" is being altered to read "One Nation Apart From God." Oh, we give the Lord lip service, but He's truly a spiritual afterthought in the minds of many. Derek Smith is a freelance writer ana author. His latest books, "Get Out of the Way, You're Blocking Your Blessings" and "You're Not Here On Accident, You're Here on Assignment," may be purchased through Xulon Publishing or wh...

  • Have you ever wondered what in the world is wrong with our country's priorities - that perhaps America, at least in some aspects, isn't the greatest nation in the world after all? I raise this question in relation to a jaw-dropping, heart-wrenching documentary I recently viewed entitled "Sicko" by Flint's own award-winning film maker, Michael Moore. There was also a segment on a young African-American woman whose baby died because the hospital nearest her home was prevented from treating her baby because the HMO said the facility wasn't within their network of preferred provider hospitals. And a young African-American man who died of kidney failure despite having a perfect donor match standing by because his insurance company deemed the transplant as "exploratory" surgery not covered un...
