Ten years ago, I was the president of the New York Board of Rabbis. In that capacity, I was asked to deliver the Jewish prayer during the Prayer for America service at Yankee Stadium Sept. 24, 2001. I present a portion of it here. I was broken then, and though I'm stronger at the broken places now, I still remember the power of the collective sense of grief, anger and fear that gripped us all. Thousands of people gathered at the Civic Center on Sunday for the God Bless America Rally to remember the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. Carolyn Tinney, of St. Albans, whose husband was in the military, attended the rally to show her patriotism. Baptist churches in West Virginia, Ohio and Kentucky organized the event.

God Bless America. We've all heard this song, made famous by Kate Smith. As I sang this song on the 4th of July, I wondered, "Why?" When we've kicked the Ten Commandments out of the schools in 1964, when we've had case after case taking down crosses and prohibiting Christian references from government activities, and we've elected a President that shunned a Christian day of prayer because he didn't want to "offend" anyone but went to a Muslim group.
Freedom isn't free. Never has been, never will be. Very special warriors have provided freedom at supreme sacrifice since time immemorial. Good people will never forget, and we celebrate Memorial Day with a hard-charging spirit in appreciation for hard-charging warriors. With his lifeblood pouring out of him from a mortal RPG wound to center mass, Pvt. 1st Class Todd Balding from Texas was, on the surface, but a bundle of red gauze and bandages, a jumble of tubes and numerous electronic apparatus beeping away. He was surrounded by a dedicated team of U.S. military medical experts at the Landstuhl hospital in Germany doing everything in their power to save the young American's life.
Do they say "God Bless America" simply because it's patriotic? Do they say it in the arrogant American belief that we're privileged to God's blessings hi ways the rest of the world is not? And more importantly, in their urging that "God Bless America," do they ever give thought to how they themselves are blessing God? As America transforms itself into a modern-day Sodom and Gomorrah, the phrase "One Nation Under God" is being altered to read "One Nation Apart From God." Munford United Methodist Church and Mission Ministries hosted a celebration to bring the message of Christ to the community while celebrating the birth of our nation. The "God Bless America" event was held July 6 at Munford City Park . Entertainment was provided and Mayor Dewayne Cole was present .
