Almost since its founding 10 years ago, satellite systems provider Globecomm Systems Inc. has tip-toed from one international minefield to another. In the late 1990s, Globecomm shifted resources to the fast- growing Far East only to see the region fall victim to the calamitous Asian flu financial crisis. A venture into Russia was rocked by the ruble crisis in 1998. Globecomm's NetSat Express subsidiary, created to provide satellite data links to the global Internet service providers, was jarred when the Internet bubble burst in 2001 and the ISPs floated away like dandelion seeds. The Internet crash was followed by the brutal, multi-year telecom meltdown, which dried up capital spending and sent scores of companies into the ash heap.

Globecomm buys ComSource Globecomm Systems Inc., a global provider of communications solutions and services, announced Friday that it has acquired ComSource Inc., of Frederick, which provides independent testing and evaluation of telecommunications equipment and related recurring long-term application support. The initial purchase price is $20 million, funded through $2 million of existing cash and $18 million through Globecomm's existing credit with Citibank. ComSource may receive up to $21 million of additional consideration, through a two- year earn-out, based on reaching certain earnings milestones. Globecomm, which is based in Hauppauge, N.Y., has offices in Savage, Md., and around the world.
