United Steelworker Union President Leo Gerard said Wednesday it is "a very scary time to be a private sector industrial worker" because the U.S. trade deficit is approaching 7 percent of gross domestic product and healthcare costs are about 16 percent of the nation's GDP. Healthcare costs account for about $8 per hour in a company's employee labor costs, so the U.S. has to address the matter by electing leaders who will deal with issue, Gerard told Pittsburgh Rotary Club members at a Downtown luncheon. A nationalized healthcare system like the one in Canada could lower that healthcare cost to about $3 per hour, Gerard said.
