According to a statement released by the Broadcasting Board of Governors, which overseas Voice of America (VOA) and other government-owned news services, it faced painful choices to pay for expanded coverage in the Middle East and new television and Internet programming. As a result, it will cut VOA's News Now broadcasts, along with those in Georgian, Greek, Turkish, Croatian and Thai, at the end of the fiscal year. The board estimates the cuts will save about $23.7 million. VOA will continue broadcasting a program known as Special English, which is aimed at beginning English speakers and English to Africa, which is broadcast in Anglophone countries on that continent and focuses on African, not global, news.

News media broadcast information on an almost daily basis that give us indicators of this real and serious problem. Accelerated ice melt is causing death and starvation among wildlife in the Arctic regions.
This winter, we've had weather that seems to swing wildly between snowfall and extreme cold and unusually warm periods in which the snow and ice melt again. It is this instability in our weather patterns that indicates climate problems. Storms, drought, tornadoes and other extreme weather continue to strike at unusual times and in unusual places, not only in our country but throughout the world.
