Contrary to recent ravings of demagogues Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Jim Quinn, "social justice" is not code for communism and Nazism but is rooted in the teachings and actions of Jesus Christ, proceeding from the premise that every person is precious, people are more important than things, and the measure of every institution is whether it threatens or enhances human life and dignity. Those who urge Christians to leave churches that use the term "social justice" fail to recognize that it is not a liberal or conservative platform, a left-wing plot, a right-wing whipping post, a buzz phrase to raise ratings or a sentiment to sell greeting cards.

Budd Boetticher was a hometown hero to the people of Evansville in the 1950s, when he directed Hollywood movies starring Randolph Scott, Robert Stack, Glenn Ford, Anthony Quinn, Rock Hudson, Robert Ryan, Sidney Poitier and Roddy McDowell. Nearly all of the 38 movies Boetticher made were "B" products, made for an era of drive-in double features, but a few stand out as lasting examples of the classic western, a film genre relegated, for now at least, to history.

Liberals want to reinstate the Fairness Doctrine on broadcasters. Why? We already have such a doctrine. It's called the free market. Twenty years ago, Rush Limbaugh started his national radio talk show. Today he has the largest audience of any radio personality. Similar success stories belong to Sean Hannity (No. 2), Glenn Beck (No. 3) and, locally, Jim Quinn. They all succeeded because they gave the public what it wanted -- a sounding board, intelligent commentary and a chance to air opinions.
