I am constantly reminded about the unparalleled natural beauty that surrounds those of us fortunate enough to live in Monterey County. From my perspective, the beauty doesn't rest only in the untouched landscapes but also in the abundant "fields of plenty" John Steinbeck wrote about. One of my favorite drives and views in the county is from Reservation Road as it descends to the Salinas Valley floor between West Blanco Road and South Davis Road.
Upon gathering at 9am in Castroville on this Saturday, about 15 cars and two vans formed a caravan winding through the fields off Castroville Boulevard. Our destination for the morning was a fully mature field of head lettuce that would soon be plowed under-part of the margin a grower expects to lose each year due to fluctuations in selling pric...

Buying gifts for a passionate gardener is sometimes a challenge. After all, who else would be happy to have a bag of compost under their tree? Who else would hang their stocking in hopes of having it filled with garden seed? Who else would proudly display a new shovel instead of the latest Hollywood DVD?
With today's economic climate, maybe it is time to get back to the basics and start producing more of our own food. Recent reports from Colorado noted that more than 40,000 people picked a farm clean in one day after the harvesters had finished in an act called field gleaning. Growing your own food can help ease some economic burdens.

I recently took a walk with my wife and daughter through one of our fields we rent to one of our neighbors. The field had been planted in corn which the neighbors had picked just a few days before. As we were walking along, we kept kicking ears of corn that had been left behind by the picker. I told my daughter when I was young, we weren't very well-off and we would often get feed for our animals by gleaning from the corn field behind our house. My wife asked if my daughter's pony would eat the corn and when I said it would, my daughter ran and got a bucket and insisted that we gather some for it. When I wanted to stop, she said "you don't know how much that horse eats" and we had to get two buckets worth.
I explained there are organizations that will go around and glean potato fields a...

IT'S AN ANCIENT practice, but these days, finding someone who knows what "gleaning" is all about is like hunting for a peapod in a field of green.

Her math teacher, Chris J. Anderson, said she is "keenly intelligent, articulate, disciplined, spirited, reflective, compassionate, remarkably mature and truly dedicated to gleaning all that she can from every moment of life.
Dominion's Award of Achievement, currently in its 16th year, has provided $65,000 in scholarship funding to African-American high school seniors pursuing higher education. The winners were selected from a field of applicants in southwestern Pennsylvania.
According to Sandra Lamar, T.E.A.M coordinator for the Y, "We are very happy to have [Gaemia Tracy] working in our program. He is dependable, dedicated and a very good role model to our students."

Instead of the beets getting plowed under, Ag Against Hunger is going to "glean" the field and provide the crops to local food banks. (Ag Against Hunger also collects edible leftovers that do not meet commercial standards.) Jeff Jones, president of the Salinas-based nonprofit, gives the volunteers-a few of them teens who would rather be sleeping-some encouragement, saying the crops will go to low-income locals who struggle to put food on the table, let alone fresh veggies. "All the produce that we are getting here," he says, "is going to people who don't get produce.
Jeremy Provost, a senior at Salinas High School, participated in the gleaning as part of his community service hours. He says he has quickly learned to appreciate where his produce comes from. "It shows us what other peopl...

Yakima, Wash. -- There were few fireworks at the first candidate forum of the 2009 election season. Those paying attention were rewarded, however, with a zinger or two.
Four seats on the Yakima City Council are up for grabs this fall, which is why the League of Women Voters invited all 11 candidates to a "meet-and-greet" Wednesday evening at the downtown library.
...Voters will get their first crack at gleaning the field in the Aug. 18 primary. Wednesday's meet...

Just because it's unsellable doesn't mean it's inconsumable. Far from it, judging by the life work of John van Hengel.
Van Hengel spent the last 38 years of his life proving this concept again and again. His efforts sprouted a global food-supply network that serves those most in need. And it has its roots right here in Phoenix.
...The bank also participates in "gleaning," where people collect the consumable food left ovver in a field after it has been mass-harvested by machines. The ...

I'm a serious sports fan; so the sight of Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, in free-fall, has been chilling and, yes, almost hypnotic. It has been like watching Macbeth fall from an airplane.
You cover your eyes but peek through your fingers.
... if there is a bit of wisdom worth gleaning from the Penn State tragedy, it may be this:. Keepping your balance on the football field is difficult, but keeping it in life is even harde...
