INDIANAPOLIS COLTS Because the team decided any improvement on defense would come from within, several players will be under pressure to make more significant contributions. The spotlight will shine on WLB CatO june and CB Joseph Jefferson. june enters camp as the starter, even though he didn't get a tackle on defense as a rookie. Rookie Gilbert Gardner should be his toughest competition. Jefferson will battle veteran Nick Harper and second-year pro Donald Strickland for a starting spot.
When you know exactly where a movie is headed, something has to convince you to take the ride. Co-screenwriters Hedges (Pieces of April, About a Boy, What's Eating Gilbert Grape) and Pierce Gardner (Lost Souls) infuse the predictable plot turns with sweetness, and [Steve Carell] sells them. The simple boy-meets-girl story unfolds when [Dan] and daughters head to the beach house of his parents (Dianne Wiest and John Mahoney), an annual trek that reunites the entire big, boisterous family for a weekend filled with food, crossword puzzles, charades and talent night. The big questionWill Dan ever love again?-gets answered when he meets Marie (Juliette Binoche) in a local bookstore. The complication? She's in a new relationship and, you guessed it, shows up at the gathering as the guest of D...
DRAFT DISH: The team was convinced no player merited the 29th overall pick and traded down to the 44th spot, where it selected S Bob Sanders. Four of the next five picks also addressed a defense that needed an influx of talent: OLB Gilbert Gardner, OLB Kendyll Pope, CB Jason David and CB Von Hutchins Sanders should be solid. He lacks size (5-8, 205) but is a big hitter. The success of the draft hinges on Gardner, Pope and David making a contribution right away.
Insultingly dumb and patently banal, "Dan in Real Life" exists only as a vehicle for star Steve Carell, whose film credibility continues to take a turn for the worse. This pseudo-romantic claptrap doesn't help. Peter Hedges directed and co-wrote the screenplay with Pierce Gardner ("Lost Souls"). Hedges is best known for writing "What's Eating Gilbert Grape," as well as his Oscar-nominated script for "About a Boy." Though usually adept at mixing comedy and drama, Hedges gets the formula all wrong this time out.
