• Valentine's Day Gifts Abound - Except for Men; Men Main Customers for Flowers, Candy

It appears that national consumer statistics hold true in local Valentine's Day buying patterns - women get a whole lot more love- themed loot than men. A new survey by the National Confectioners Association shows only 6 percent of men get Valentine's Day gifts of any kind, while 36 percent of mothers and wives will get gifts today. The survey also found that, on average, men spend $130 on candy, cards, flowers and other Valentine's Day presents.

The Christmas season is so much different now than it was when I was a child. Our excitement began early as December rolled around, and we began chiding one another to "be good or Santa Claus will see you." Of course we knew down deep that Santa was a fairy tale, much like the fairies that we pretended to believe in, but it was such fun. We grubbed around for pennies, and sometimes a nickel, to save for buying gifts. Some of the neighborhood men played cards in the shanty beside the Virginia office building (we knew it was a sin to gamble) but we were not above hunting for the loose change they had lost. On a lucky day we might find a quarter that was left behind.
