When he walked on the Earth, he spoke to us of the gifts that really matter: "For I was hungered, and ye gave me meat; I was thirsty, and ye gave me drink; I was a stranger, and ye took me in; naked, and ye clothed me; I was sick, and ye visited me; I was in prison, and ye came unto me." This message of giving speaks to what's good in and required of all of us.
I'm reminded of the wonderful children's story of Beatrice's Goat by Page McBrier about a young Ugandan girl whose dream of going to school seems out of reach because her family is poor.
In exchange, the receiving family promises to pass the first offspring on to another family-it's called "Passing on the Gift." This living chain of giving is a dynamic and sustainable approach to grassroots economic development.

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Harry & David Holdings Inc., the mail-order gourmet food company, filed for bankruptcy protection on Monday [March 28] as a weak economy led consumers and businesses to cut spending on its signature fruit baskets.
The "pre-arranged" Chapter 11 filing would give bondholders control of the company, whose roots date back a century when hotel owner Samuel Rosenberg bought some Oregon pear orchards. His sons, Harry and David Rosenberg, later came up with the idea of selling pears by mail.

The paper, to be clear, is not as much an attempt to comment upon the interrelationship between a philosophy and a socio-economy of the gift as such, so much as it is an attempt to illustrate how a particular phenomenon, in this case leadership, demands the inauguration of a deliberate and ongoing dialogue between social science and philosophy, on the topic of the gift. Insofar as an economic phenomenology of the gift might be concerned, a recently published two-volume anthological handbook on the economics of giving, altruism, and reciprocity makes not even a single reference to the work of, for example, Husserl, Heidegger, Levinas, Derrida, or Marion.4 Never the two (economics and phenomenology) shall meet, it seems.

Corbin Berkstresser arrived at school Monday morning ready to wrap up life as a high schooler. With only three days left of exams there was another cause to celebrate: Monday was his 19th birthday. He soon discovered his unexpected gift.
That same day, quarterback Tyler Gabbert announced he was leaving the Missouri football team. For Berkstresser, the only quarterback in MU's 2011 recruiting class, Gabbert's departure amounted to a promotion, albeit by default.
