  • For-profit college lobbyists must be stunned by their industry's ability over the past two years to capture an enormous share of Post- 9/11 GI Bill benefits earned by Iraq and Afghanistan war era veterans. The competition to sign veterans who have the most valuable education package since World War II will intensify until Congress acts to protect vets and taxpayers.

  • S. taxpayers spent $4.4billion in the 2010-11 academic year on post-secondary education for military veterans under the Post-9/11 G.I. Bill. That's a lot of money, but vets of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan earned it. Many don't get the benefit intended, though. Instead of earning a marketable degree, they drop out, leaving with nontransferable credits and debt. Congress can make vets less vulnerable by closing a legal loophole that paints a dollar sign on their backs.

  • Veterans using the Post-9/11 GI bill will see their monthly living stipends stopped between fall and winter semesters, starting next year, and only full time students will continue to draw stipends at the 100 percent rate. Those two cost-saving changes, plus a new $17,500 nationwide cap on Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits for students attending private colleges and universities, freed up enough program dollars for Congress to expand new GI Bill eligibility and improve other features, all to take effect by fall of 2011.

  • It's easy to imagine awkward moments on college campuses these days as veterans of the Iraq/Afghanistan era mix with another category of student also using generous education benefits of the Post-9/11 GI Bill. What's your service and where did you serve?

  • WASHINGTON, Sept. 17 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The American Legion testified to Congress on Sept. 16 that the Post 9/11 GI Bill, which provides veterans with the most comprehensive education benefits since World War II, should be extended to cover courses at non-degree granting institutions. Testifying before the House Veterans' Affairs Subcommittee on Economic Opportunity, Robert Madden of The American Legion said in his written statement that "a veteran or family member may choose a more traditional path and attend a non-degree institution, but cannot use their Post-9/11 GI Bill benefits to complete these courses. Most of these education paths consist of a shorter training time and can lead to immediate employment. The American Legion believes that veterans should never be limited in...

  • A STUDY OF the federal money spent in the past two years to send veterans to college shows some disturbing trends. Too often, veterans are using the GI Bill to go to expensive private schools that advertise flexible schedules and expedited degree programs. They take out loans to help pay the costs, but nearly half of vets drop out within a year. Many default on loans because they can't get a decent-paying job.

  • If you are a business owner and your accountant tells you that for every dollar you've put into your company you've made $7, you probably would think that was a fair return on your investment. I thought it appropriate on this Independence Day weekend to pause and consider the rate of return on one of the best investments in U.S. history -- the Servicemen's Readjustment Act of 1944 or, as we have come to know it, the GI Bill.
