When the Getty Center's central garden opened to the public in December 1997, I interviewed Robert Irwin, the garden's designer. When he received the commission he was a renowned artist, but knew little about horticulture. However, by the time the garden opened, he had undertaken a crash course in botany, visiting specialty nurseries with plant experts up and down the Southern California coast to be sure his choices would survive.
Now, 10 years later, he revisits often, making adjustments as needed, and the garden has blossomed into a magnificent, mature work of art, just as he envisioned.

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The world-famous Getty Center art complex and nearby Mount St. Mary's College were evacuated Wednesday as a fire burned in thick brush on the steep slopes of the Santa Monica Mountains.
The fire erupted at 12:44 p.m. and quickly grew to 80 acres above parking facilities for the Getty, which has a collection ranging from European paintings to illuminated manuscripts and photographs, including works by Claude Monet and Vincent Van Gogh.

Dengue Fever, a band of '60s Cambodian pop and American surf rock revivalists, drops by the Getty Center on Saturday to give museum- goers a taste of its new "Cannibal Courtship" disc. The performance is part of the Getty Center's free "Saturdays off the 405" series that pairs outdoor music with summer exhibitions, including "Gods of Angkor: Bronzes from the National Museum of Cambodia."
