  • PUEBLO, Colo. - Three fugitive siblings wanted in a crime spree in Florida and Georgia were captured Wednesday in Colorado after firing shots at officers during a high-speed chase and crashing their car into a highway barrier, authorities said. Ryan Edward Dougherty, 21; Dylan Dougherty Stanley, 26; and Lee Grace Dougherty, 29, were targets of a nationwide search after they were accused of shooting at a police car during a chase last week in Florida and robbing a Georgia bank with assault weapons.

  • When Troy Davis was executed in Georgia Wednesday night, I immediately thought of Dennis Dechaine. Dechaine is the Aroostook County native who was convicted in 1989 for the murder of Sarah Cherry in Bowdoinham. The victim, just 12 years old, was babysitting at the time, and Dechaine was quickly arrested by police. I was a young editor, and the case was a big local story - as it still would be today.

  • Marie Patricia Laird, 62, of Boydton, formerly of Georgia, passed away on Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at her residence. She was the daughter of the late William and Antonia Massey Laird, and was preceded in death by a son, Christopher Todd Sweeny. She was a former supervisor with Fort Lee. Mrs. Laird is survived by her son, Hugh Scott Sweeny; seven grandchildren; three sisters; four brothers; numerous nieces and nephews.

  • Newt Gingrich vowed Tuesday that his 2012 run for the GOP presidential nomination will be free of the intellectual arrogance and personal disorganization that he concedes marred his tenure as speaker of the U.S. House in the 1990s. One day before making his official announcement on Wednesday, the Georgia Republican told The Washington Times that he is confident he has the fundraising capacity and the key campaign staffers on board that he will need to win in 2012.

  • JACKSON, Ga. - Georgia executed Troy Davis on Wednesday night for the murder of an off-duty police officer, a crime he denied committing right to the end as supporters around the world mourned and declared that an innocent man was put to death. Defiant to the end, he told relatives of Mark MacPhail that his 1989 slaying was not his fault. "I did not have a gun," he insisted.

  • Manassas continued to roar through the neighborhood like Sherman through Georgia Wednesday. Only this time some different folks were lighting the bonfire in an 84-56 District 15-AA boys basketball rout at Trezevant. The night before, it was the Dontavious Sears show with 34 points in an 18-point win over Frayser. But after the 6-4 junior scored nine of his team's points in a 17-16 first-quarter, the rest of the night was a pass-around affair by the Tigers (15-6, 6-0).
