  • It was Black Tuesday for Plarico Burress. He was formally dismissed from the Giants this past Tuesday. Plarico Burress will not be shopping for a Super Bowl ring this year after the New York Giants placed him on the non-football injured list that effectively prevents him from participating with hie team for the remainder of this season, including all post-season action, which means he will not be eligible if the Giants reach the Super Bowl to play in the game. A native of Virginia Beach and an all-America at Michigan State, Burress, now 31 years of age, doesn't haven't many sea- sons left in his legs. The latest blot on his resume prompted New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg to issue an unprofes- sional demand that "He should be prosecuted to the full extend of the law." A strong statement...

  • MINERAL, Va. - Tens of millions of people from Georgia to Canada were jolted Tuesday by the strongest earthquake to strike the East Coast since World War II. Three weeks before the 10th anniversary of Sept. 11, office workers poured out of New York skyscrapers and the Pentagon, relieved it was nothing more sinister than an act of nature. There were no known deaths or serious injuries, but cracks appeared in the National Cathedral and three capstones broke off its tower. Windows shattered and grocery stores were wrecked in Virginia, where the quake was centered. The White House and Capitol were partly evacuated.

  • DEMOCRATIC STRATEGISTS are focused on possibly putting a Floridian on the national ticket, but it may not be the most obvious choice, Sen. Bob Graham. This year's vice-presidential nominee could be Graham's junior colleague, Sen. Bill Nelson. Graham recently announced his availability for the vice presidency, following his short-term bid for president and his announcement that he would not seek a fourth term in the Senate. Graham did not help his reputation with his shaky presidential run, but Sen. John Kerry is believed to be looking for any running mate who would guarantee electoral votes.

On Tuesday, members of the U.S. Marshal Service Task Force, including Detective Raymond Quinn, arrested Michael Patrick Rogers, 49, at a Beacon Street address where he sometimes stays.

  • ATLANTA - Yet another appeal denied, Troy Davis was left with little to do today but wait to be executed for a murder he insists he did not commit. He lost his most realistic chance to avoid lethal injection on Tuesday, when Georgia's pardons board rejected his appeal for clemency. As his scheduled 7 p.m. execution neared, his backers resorted to far-fetched measures. They asked prisons officials to let him take a polygraph test; urged prison workers to strike or call in sick; asked prosecutors to block the execution and they even considered a desperate appeal for White House intervention.

  • ATLANTA - Mike London hopes his Virginia players learn it's more fun to play in a bowl game than to watch one on TV. London's Virginia team held its first Georgia Dome practice Tuesday for Saturday night's Chick-fil-A Bowl game against Auburn. Virginia is making its first bowl trip since the 2007 season.
