Although early returns in Tuesday's Georgia Court of Appeals runoff election gave Debra Bernes' more than a 3-to-1 advantage in her home county of Cobb, statewide the race was looking closer.
With 88 percent of state precincts reporting, Ms. Bernes had 55 percent of the vote, while her opponent, Howard Mead, had 45 percent in their race for a seat on the court.

There really is an election Tuesday, and it does happen to be the third vote to fill an open seat on the Georgia Court of Appeals.
There's no official estimate of turnout, but the few statewide general election runoffs held in recent decades have generally attracted less than 10 percent of the electorate. For a "down ballot" race like a judgeship, political veterans informally predict turnout will be on the low end, although the race might hold more interest for lawyers.

The Georgia Supreme Court, which canceled Tuesday's runoff election for an open seat on the Court of Appeals, said it will expedite the lawsuit challenging the race's general election results.
On Monday, the state's highest court prevented the runoff from being conducted until Howard Mead, the third-place finisher in the July 20 general election, can argue his appeal.
