PORTSMOUTH - George Gilbert Thompson Jr., 75, passed away peacefully in his home May 14, 2008. George was born May 20, 1932, in Wisconsin to George G. and Grace Lee Kane Thompson.
George's love of books, reading, anything by Shakespeare and his beloved cats were the center of his life. He was the longest serving volunteer for the Friends of the Portsmouth Public Library. For 20 years, George was the book store manager in charge of the Friends monthly book sale. His expertise in selecting books and his organizational skills were invaluable. The library was George's second home and reading his favorite sport.

George and the former Lois Martin were married in DeWitt on January 21, 1948, with the Rev. L.O. Wright officiating. The couple has three children: William Alvis Thompson of Prince George, Mrs. Judy Hawkins of Brentwood, Tenn., and Donald Martin Thompson of Sussex.They have five grandchildren.
