  • , 79, of Sussex County died Dec. 25, 2009, at his home after a short illness. The son of the late Otis and Gracie Sheffield, George is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Grace Peffer Sheffield, four children and their spouses, Tony and Doris Sheffield, Clarence and Tammy Sheffield, Sammy Sheffield of West Virginia and Mary and Edward Harless of Disputanta; two brothers, Jamie Sheffield and Arthur Sheffield; and two sisters, Audrey Morris and Marie Jones. He was blessed also with numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews and many special friends including his brother- in-law Joseph Peffer and Kevin Reynolds.

  • Betty Ann Sheffield, 58, of Colonial Heights, died Thursday, Aug. 3, 2006, after a long battle with heart disease. She was the daughter of the late George D. Jr. and Mary B. Sheffield. Ms. Sheffield was retired from the International Mission Board, where she worked for 14 years. Betty is survived by her brother, George D. Sheffield III; her stepmother, Mrs. Helen Sheffield; and her stepbrother, Ricky Chavis, all of Colonial Heights; her stepsister, Rhonda Chavis of Chesterfield; her niece, Joey Sparkman and husband, Rudy; her nephew, George D. Sheffield IV and wife, Laura; her nephew, Charles B. Sheffield and his fiancee, Kendal. She also leaves three great- nephews and three great-nieces; many aunts, uncles and cousins. Ms. Sheffield loved her family and her many friends more than life.

George was born June 10, 1925, to George Thomas and Blanche Moore in Hooper, Washington. He grew up on a farm in West Richland, and graduated from Richland High School in 1942. He moved to a farm on Horse Heaven with his family the next year. George and Francis Gatino were married in Prosser in 1945 and had three daughters.   • NEW YORK -- Yankees officials insisted George Steinbrenner was in good health, a day after Gary Sheffield said his future with New York would be secure if the owner's condition was better. Steinbrenner fainted last month while attending his granddaughter's play, the second time in three years he collapsed in public, and he returned to his Florida office several days later. Sheffield said "middle men" had blocked him from speaking with Steinbrenner and that "if it wasn't for his health, I'd have made that conversation happen.
