  • PRINCE GEORGE - The long-awaited library hasn't opened yet, but some county residents and officials are disturbed by something they read there. The main sign outside the near-complete facility next to the county's courthouse building bears the words "Prince George Branch Library" in metallic letters about a foot tall, with the words "Appomattox Regional Library System" underneath in letters about half as tall.

  • For about 24 hours or thereabouts, my hat was off to the seven members of the board governing the Jackson-George Regional Library System in southern Mississippi. They had decided, officially, not to make room on the shelf in any of their eight libraries in Jackson and George Counties for one of the best-selling books in America today, the book that Publishers Weekly named best book of 2004: "America (The Book)," a mock-textbook in mock-civics by mock- anchorman Jon Stewart and the writers of "The Daily Show. Or maybe I should write: A "textbook" in "civics" by "anchorman" Jon Stewart and the writers of "The Daily Show." The quotation marks, of course, convey the nudge-nudge nihilism that is comedian- cum-author Stewart's stock-in-trade. Not that it was Mr. Stewart's brand of "comedy" -...

The board voted unanimously to approve the plan presented by County Administrator John G. Kines Jr. to accept a bid from Martinsville-based Carter Bank & Trust to issue the bonds with a 15- year maturity and an interest rate of 3.8 percent. SunTrust and BB&T also submitted bids with interest rates of 5.43 percent and 4.98 percent, respectively.

  • GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) -- Library officials in two southern Mississippi counties have banned Jon Stewart's best-selling "America (The Book)" over the satirical textbook's nude depictions of the nine U.S. Supreme Court justices. I've been a librarian for 40 years, and this is the only book I've objected to so strongly that I wouldn't allow it to circulate," said Robert Willits, director of the Jackson-George Regional Library System of eight libraries in Jackson and George counties.

  • PRINCE GEORGE -- A generous donation on the part of the Board of Supervisors will allow the regional heritage museum to expand and let in a little bit more history. The board, with the approval of the Prince George Historical Society, added the use of the building previously occupied by the Prince George Branch of the Appomattox Regional Library System to the lease on the old county courthouse at their Sept. 26 meeting. The society leasing the courthouse space for the Regional heritage museum for 10 years for $1 a year. The additional building was added to the lease at no additional cost to the organization.
