BANGOR - , 98, died Nov. 10, 2011, at an Orono health care center. He was born June 25, 1913, in Bangor, the son of George T. and Maud (Davis) Carlisle.
With the exception of several years after graduation from college when he worked in Ohio for the Department of Agriculture CCC Ohio River flood control project and later years spent seasonally in Sarasota, Fla., George lived his entire life in Bangor. He graduated from Bangor High School in 1931 and the University of Maine School of Forestry in 1935. Throughout his adult life he was a leader in Bangor area business, political and civic activities. In his words: "We've been very successful with economic development in the past and we need to recommit ourselves and make sure we are committed to sustaining that as competition for economic development opportunities becomes greater.
George Davis has been elected to the Dubuque Community School Board twice, but won't complete his second term if elected to the Dubuque City Council in November. Davis toyed with the idea of serving both positions if elected as 4th Ward representative, but said he will resign from the school board by end of the first quarter in 2012.

An orphan for much of her childhood, Irene--who married George A. Davis, first a salesman for American Saw & Mfg. and then owner of that company--was, later in her life, very generous when it came to donating money to groups that would help those less-fortunate, especially children, said Walachy, executive director of the foundation that bears the Davis name. [...] the foundation understands that resources are limited in Western Mass., and that there are simply not as many charitable foundations here as there are in Boston, she went on, adding that funds are also awarded to groups that assist the elderly, the mentally challenged, and many other constituencies.

During the early morning hours on Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2009, the Lord sent an angel to bring Brother George "Roosevelt" Davis, of 25311 Troublefield Road, Stony Creek, Va., to rest.
George was born on Aug. 25, 1951, to the late James Henry Davis and Minerva "Boose" Davis. He attended public schools in Sussex County, Va., and joined Hunting Quarter Baptist Church at an early age. He worked as a mail transporter/deliverer until his retirement.
