The crews of volunteers that step up to make 2,000 or so meals for the annual St. George Orthodox Cathedral are all about tradition yet grateful for innovation. Get a slice of kibbee, a layered and spiced ground beef with pine nuts, and you may notice the tiny marking of a cross, done by hand and the end of a spoon, by David LeMarier. At 100 slices per tray and 76 trays, thats 7,600 crosses. St. George Cathedral will host two days of demonstrations and lectures to experience the early Christian art of Iconography. "Icon Festival: Early Christian Art" will be held from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Oct 16 and from 1 to 4 p.m. Oct. 17 at the St. George Cathedral Conference Center, Lee and Court streets.

St. George Orthodox Church will become a cathedral later this month. Bishop Joseph Thomas of the Antiochian Orthodox Christian Archdiocese of North America has bought a home in Kanawha City, said the Rev. Olof Scott, St. George's priest the last 30 years. Thomas will divide his time between here and a cathedral in the Oakland district of Pittsburgh.

Daymark wine and food affair
A food and wine tasting/meal to benefit Daymark will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. May 5 at St. George Orthodox Cathedral, at the corner of Court and Lee streets. The evening includes Falcor and other wines and signature foods provided by 17 of Charleston's leading chefs, a silent auction and music by Bob Thompson Unit.
