As the vice president for jazz and progressive artists and repertory at Columbia Records during the late '70s into the '90s, Dr. Butler always proved to be an innovating force. He was responsible for signing a string of young lions to the label, such as [Wynton Marsalis] and Branford Marsalis, [Harry Connick, Jr.], Terrence Blanchard, Rodney Franklin, David Sanchez, and Kent and Marion Jordan. During his reign he also signed Nnenna Freelon, Billy Cobham and Kirk Whalum.

Funeral services for will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, May 23, 2009 at Science Hill Baptist Church with the Rev. Charlie Johnson officiating. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Engineering and architectural firm George Butler Associates Inc. in O'Fallon has named John Choinka as group leader of its Water Environment Group. He has been with the firm 13 years, working in project management, land acquisition, and design and construction administration.
