GEOMETRY WARS GALAXIES," for the Nintendo Wii or Nintendo DS, by Sierra, rated E for Everyone, reviewer's rating: 7 (out of 10)
The world was introduced to "Geometry Wars" a few years ago as a hidden minigame in Xbox's "Project Gotham Racer 2." The game grew in cult status and was available through the Xbox Live Arcade downloads.

Geometry Wars: Evolved combines the arcade elegance of Robotron: 2084 and Tempest and spins them into a numbingly fast-paced shooter. Using the two analog control sticks to maneuver your ship and simultaneously direct a stream of firepower feels a little like patting your head and rubbing your belly at first, but with practice it becomes more precise than any classic arcade title. By providing support for data like velocity and an enormous range of movement, modern game pads' analog sticks far exceed their predecessor, the eight-way joystick, in control.

If my last column was any indication, it should be obvious that I miss the arcade experience and the time when home consoles tried their best to emulate that experience through gameplay and difficulty. That is why I became so elated by the "Geometry Wars" phenomenon. Here was a game that contained the arcade experience - the mind-numbing difficulty matched with addictive gameplay and a high-score competition that had players on Live battling tooth and nail trying to get that No. 1 spot - and it was, and probably still is, one of the most downloaded games on Xbox Live.
Now the folks at Bizarre Creations have given the world "Geometry Wars 2," and it is everything a sequel should be. For the uninitiated, take the outer-space shooting style of "Asteroids," combine it with the frantic pace ...

WHEN a free retro-style game called "Geometry Wars" was included with the XBOX 360 title "Project Gotham Racing 2," the developers had no idea it would spawn a series unto itself. A sequel was made available over XBOX Live soon after, and now the third installment, titled "Geometry Wars Galaxies," is available on the Nintendo Wii.
Using low-res 2-D vector graphics (which resemble glowing neon signs), this game won't stun players with its visuals, but the game play is out of this world. Basically, the player uses a spaceship to blast increasingly difficult waves of enemies without being obliterated. There is no need to worry about gathering ammunition since the supply is unlimited, which is fortunate because so are the enemies!

The Electronic Entertainment Expo gained a reputation during the 1990s as an event of epic gaming proportions with new games announced and forthcoming games playable, and even industry big guns could not rest on their laurels, or they would face the attending public's wrath. However, with the exclusion of the public from E3 and its general downsizing starting last year, the expo has begun a steady decrease in importance that revealed itself in what was shown - and what was not - to reporters at the show and the public at home.
The "winner" of this year's E3, if it can be said there is one, is clearly Microsoft. Its announcements of exclusive content - "Fallout 3" DLC, "Portal: Still Alive," "Geometry Wars 2" - along with that of breaking into Sony's exclusivity of "Final Fantasy" were e...

When the Xbox Live Arcade debuted in 2004 for the original Microsoft console, I don't think I even paid attention. Filled with casual games, online freeware and older arcade titles, the service seemed underdeveloped, overpriced and generally boring.
However, starting with the release of "Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved," a wonderful thing has happened to XBLA. Since that time, the service has transformed into a vehicle for original content that compares with both the classic arcade titles of gamers' youths and even the great console experiences of the 16-bit era. In short, it is keeping video games true to their roots, "saving" the original video game experience as newer games on store shelves morph into something beyond.
