  • WASHINGTON, April 1 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- As Sudan's national election descends into crisis amid growing opposition boycotts, U.S.-based Darfuris and policy experts from Sudan Now, a campaign led by a group of prominent anti-genocide and human rights organizations, are calling for Congress to step up its oversight of the current U.S. Sudan policy. The group is launching a social media campaign today to encourage leading members of Congress to privately and publicly engage with the Obama administration on Sudan. At this critical moment for Sudan, Congress should hold the administration responsible for faithful implementation of the Sudan policy released last October," states Sam Bell, Executive Director of the Genocide Intervention Network.

  • Some of my friends think I'm crazy. "You know," they tell me, "Voldemort is not real. And Harrys parents were never murdered in Godric's Hollow. In fact, Godric's Hollow and [Harry Potter] don't even exist. You see, Harry Potter takes place in something called 'a story.' And a story ... The Muggle Mindset affects every aspect of our society: Lindsay Lohan supersedes news about genocide, men assess their "worth" by their paychecks, women's bodies are treated as commodities and our educational system preoccupies itself not with stimulating children's curiosity but rather getting them to efficiently regurgitate information on standardized tests. (At the Harry Potter Alliance we refer to "Leave No Child Behind" as "Leave No Imagination Recognized.") The most notable effort in our quirky qu...

  • HACKENSACK -- Students, educators and community members gathered Saturday for the New Jersey Voices Against Genocide conference at Fairleigh Dickinson University's Hackensack campus, an event designed to spur North Jerseyans to action regarding ongoing conflicts in Darfur, Chad and Congo. I just hope that people increase their awareness," said organizer Lindsay Mulford, a Ramsey High School senior and president of the school's chapter of STAND, the student-led division of the Genocide Intervention Network, a co-organizer of the conference. "Even if they learn one interesting fact to tell someone else, or [if they] sign a petition ... little actions help.

  • Not all the investments made with the 72,000 government employees' pension pay-ins are quite so healthy. PERA invests in 16 companies with potential ties to the Darfur conflict in Sudan, seven of which are listed as "highest offenders" by the Sudan Divestment Task Force, a project of the Genocide Intervention Network. The rest have responded to divestment threats and engaged in dialogue with human rights organizations. I have 22 years of PERA investment in there myself," [Lawrence Rodriguez] says. "I believe it would probably concern just about any other PERA contributor. "The state should not do business with those companies," [Robin Gould] says. "It's not like it's a huge part of the portfolio, but it's very important to those folks who have been following what's going on in Darfur."

  • Four years ago, Mark Hanis "didn't know if the Janjaweed militia was a person, place or thing." Today, the bearded 26-year-old heads the Genocide Intervention Network (GI-Net), a savvy Washington- based nonprofit dedicated to fighting genocide, particularly in Sudan. Although he didn't learn about the Darfur region of Sudan until his senior year at Swarthmore College, Mr. Hanis' ties to genocide run deep. Four of his grandparents are Holocaust survivors. He grew up in a Jewish enclave in Quito, Ecuador, where everyone in his synagogue was either "a Holocaust survivor or a descendent of a Holocaust survivor.

  • In signing into law the Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act on Dec. 31, President Bush continued his determination to try to bring an end to the government of Sudan's savage, continuing genocide. This law mandates that companies doing business with the federal government must certify that they are not doing any with the government of Sudan. As the Washington-based Genocide Intervention Network, a key in getting this law passed and signed, pointed out: "The U.S. government has millions of dollars of contracts with... companies that support the genocidal regime in Sudan A ban on renewal of federal contracts with those companies [would also] increase pressure on [other] foreign companies that fund the genocide.

  • This victory is the result of the tireless efforts of many organizations, including the Save Darfur Coalition, the NAACP, American Jewish World Service, the National Association of Evangelicals, Americans Against the Darfur Genocide and especially the Genocide Intervention Network and the Sudan Divestment Taskforce, who have been a voice for the voiceless and pushing for the enactment Sudan Accountability and Divestment Act.

  • Two weeks ago, SFR reported that New Mexico's Public Employee Retirement Fund has $28.3 million invested in companies identified as "highest offenders" by the Sudan Divestment Task Force, a project of the Genocide Intervention Network [Outtakes, Oct. 17: "Blood Pensions"]. We need to look at this. This is important stuff," State Investment Council spokesman Charles Wollman says. "We'll look at it, decide whether it's doable and bring that to the Investment Council and the nine members would vote on it. PetroChina is a publicly traded subsidiary of China National Petroleum Corporation, which itself is wholly owned by the Chinese government. The two companies' managing officers overlap, and billions of dollars have been transferred between the companies. In a sense, CNPC's Sudan endeavo...

  • WASHINGTON, Aug. 17 /U.S. Newswire/ -- The first-ever "scorecard" grading Congress on its efforts to end the genocide in Darfur, Sudan, shows that a large majority of legislators have failed to follow through with a unanimous congressional resolution in 2004 calling for an end to the genocide. According to the report released today by the nonpartisan Genocide Intervention Network (GI-Net), both the House of Representatives and the Senate earned an overall grade of "C" based on the members' performance on a number of key legislative items intended to aggressively address the crisis. The scorecard -- available online at http://www.DarfurScores.org -- also recognizes a bipartisan coalition of representatives and senators vigorously supporting civilian protection for endangered civilians in...
