BLUE HILL, Maine -- Blue Hill Memorial Hospital now has a state- of-the-art screening for pregnant women to gauge of risk for genetic abnormalities in the first trimester of pregnancy. Kristin Petros recently was certified to conduct the ultrasound portion of this test by the Nuchal Translucency Quality Review Committee.
The imaging portion of this prenatal test can help doctors and midwives assess a baby's risk of having Down syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities, as well as major congenital heart problems. The screening test does not involve radiation, causes no discomfort and is not invasive. It does require an ultrasound and typically a blood draw.
