  • The head of a powerful congressional subcommittee called for tougher restrictions on DTC television advertising for prescription drugs. Legislators paid particularly close attention to spots for Merck and Schering-Plough's jointly marketed cholesterol drug Vytorin. The Vytorin ad campaign linking food and family as sources of high cholesterol ran from September 2004 until January 2008, when a study dubbed ENHANCE found that Vytorin failed to keep neck arteries any clearer than Zocor, which is available as a cheaper generic. Legislators also eyed ads for Pfizer's cholesterol drug Lipitor featuring artificial heart inventor Robert Jarvik.

  • Last month, Pfizer's cholesterol-fighting drug Lipitor, the world's best-selling medication, saw the expiration of its patent protection, thus opening the market to generic competition. Within just the past two weeks, Pfizer has lost nearly 15 percent of the market to atorvastatin (the generic version of Lipitor), a figure that probably will rise sharply over the next several months. But instead of cheering on the virtuous cycle of innovation, competition and consumer benefits that this represents, policymakers have slammed Pfizer for slashing the price of its own drug to compete with cheaper generics. Patents are critical to pharmaceutical innovation because it can cost $1 billion and take longer than a decade to bring a single new drug to market. Patents allow companies a monopoly per...

  • TRENTON, N.J. - Lipitor is so valuable that its maker, Pfizer Inc., is practically paying people to keep taking the blockbuster cholesterol medicine instead of generic alternatives. Pfizer has devised discounts and incentives for patients, insurers and processors of prescriptions that will, at least for the next six months, make the brand-name drug about as cheap as or cheaper than generics.

  • WILMINGTON, Del. - Pfizer Inc. won a court ruling blocking generic competition for cholesterol-lowering Lipitor, the world's best-selling prescription drug, until 2011, sending the company stock up 12 percent in after-hours trading. S. District Judge Joseph J. Farnan Jr. said a version of the drug by India's Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. would infringe Pfizer's patents. The judge also upheld the validity of the two patents. Farnan issued his ruling Friday after hearing a non-jury trial in Wilmington that ended in December 2004 and reading post-trial briefs.

  • TRENTON, N.J. - Sales of cholesterol blockbuster Lipitor plunged by half barely a week after the world's top-selling drug got its first U.S. generic competition, new data show. That's despite a very aggressive effort by Lipitor maker Pfizer Inc. to keep patients on its pill, which generated peak sales of $13 billion a year, through patient subsidies and big rebates to insurers.

  • Some of the world's best-selling prescription drugs are coming off patent in the next 14 months, creating a boon for generic drug makers such as Mylan Inc. and lowering costs for millions of patients. Of the top 20 drugs sold in the United States last year, eight will lose patent protection by end of 2012, representing at least $25 billion in sales for their makers, according to IBISWorld, a Los Angeles-based industry research firm.

  • NEW YORK A federal appeals court Wednesday upheld a lower court ruling which found that a generic drug company infringed on one patent for Pfizer Inc.'s Lipitor but reversed the decision on another patent, which may bring cheaper versions of the cholesterol- lowering agent to the market a year earlier than expected. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit reversed the decision of the lower court by finding that Indian generic company Ranbaxy Laboratories Ltd. did not infringe on a patent which would have extended Lipitor's patent life through June 2011. However, the appeals court upheld the decision on another patent which protects Lipitor through March 2010.

  • A costly railroad strike is looming just in time to scare Christmas-season retailers unless the nation's freight railroads and labor unions resolve their differences by Tuesday. The railroads include Union Pacific Corp. and Burlington Northern Santa Fe. Union Pacific has a rail yard in Colton and BNSF operates rail yards in San Bernardino and Barstow. Congress could intervene as early as today to avert a shutdown. House lawmakers said Thursday they hope the parties will agree to extend the negotiation period for another 60 days. If not, House GOP leaders intend to bring up for a vote today a bill to block a strike, said Rep. Bill Shuster, R-Pa., chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure rail subcommittee. The bill would impose the settlement recommendations of a five-membe...
