ST. LOUIS -- Maj. Gen. Henry Halleck assured William Switzler of Columbia that he would vigorously enforce his orders barring Union troops from enticing slaves away from their masters.
In a short letter responding to one from Switzler, Halleck said he would issue a general order directing that all Federal units undergo an inspection to discover if they were harboring fugitive slaves. Halleck had issued an order soon after taking command in St. Louis directing his troops to keep runaway slaves out of their camps.

OTTERVILLE -- Brig. Gen. Jeff C. Davis would lead the division sent south for operations against Missouri secessionists under Maj. Gen. Sterling Price, Brig. Gen. John Pope decided.
In a report to Maj. Gen. Henry Halleck, Pope said he would send Davis with five infantry regiments, two artillery batteries and four cavalry companies, complete with rations for 10 days.

A plan to merge General Services police officers with the Los Angeles Police Department was widely criticized Friday by union representatives, who said it would reduce patrols at city parks and libraries.
Half a dozen union leaders representing General Services police officers, librarians and other city employee groups appeared at City Hall to question Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa's plan to fold more than 100 officers into the LAPD by July 1.
