I was on a plane within the week for my basic training and joined the 101st Airborne Division's 3rd Bridge in Nam within three months. "Some sacrifices you never stop making," said Williams. As one of the state's more promising young lawyers who rose to the rank of brigadier general during the Civil War, some believed Orme was destined for political office of high rank. Born in Washington, D.C., in 1832, Orme headed west in his late teens, settling first in Chicago and then Bloomington, all the while studying law. He was admitted to the bar in 1852. The following year, he married Nannie L. McCullough, the daughter of McLean County Circuit Clerk William McCullough.
