The educational dilemma in Detroit is headed nowhere fast. Rumors are floating around the city that the General Education Diploma (GED) program will be closing at the end of 2007 and if that's to be factual, then an "education liquidation" is inevitable. If we really look at it from a standpoint that involves race, then take for instance the end of affirmative action. Detroit is beginning to look more like New Orleans after 2005 Hurricane Katrina devastation, feeling abandoned by the government because of its predominantly Black population. Laptop computers, new textbooks and spacious classrooms are found in suburban schools while graffiti, old text books and congested classrooms remain common in city schools. New athletic fields are either constructed or re-constructed in many schools,...

Jackson Newsome is just like any other student at Marshall University with plenty of major life decisions to make and little time to make them. He lived in the dorms for a while. He has studied and worked hard for the past few years as he majored in both French and psychology. But theres something different about Newsome. At just 18, he is on his way out of Marshall as other students his age are just getting started on their college educations. He will graduate Dec. 10. Newsome went to South Charleston Middle School until he finished eighth grade and then was home schooled. His mother, Shonda Toler, pulled her son from public school because of his epilepsy, a condition he has had since childhood. His level of academic maturity also seemed to surpass what was expected of him. Toler notic...

After reading a recent article and the TH editorial regarding Central High School's viewing of President Obama's address to the nation's students, I felt that the students of my school were unfairly portrayed as slackers. The article focused on a small segment of our school's student body in a room that also functions as the health clinic. Across the hall there was a large group of students who watched the address quietly and with interest.
I have attended Central High School since the spring of 2008. When the school board started discussing closing Central, I thought that my only option would be to earn a general education diploma. I had a baby at the end of the summer and learned Central High School was given a reprieve and would be allowed to stay open. Originally this did not change...

I am writing this letter in response to Lawrence Korb, who stated, "The military wants to recruit people who remain in high- school until graduation because they are more likely to complete their enlistments and adapt to the military culture. Someone getting a general education diploma is a high- school dropout ("Reagan and the draft," Op-Ed, Friday). I take great offence to this statement, as I was a high-school dropout who received a GED four years later. There is no dishonor in receiving a GED, and it is widely accepted as being on par with a "normal" high- school diploma. Many well- established institutions accept a GED as an indication of someone's level of education, and the military is one of them. Claiming that a person who earned a GED is unworthy of military service is doing a...

On Monday, four convicted criminals received a healthy dose of hope for a productive and crime-free future when they received their General Education Development diplomas. Roughly the equivalent of a high school diploma, the degree was awarded to four inmates in the Petersburg Jail system.
The program is a new offering under freshman Sheriff Vanessa Crawford, who was elected last November and started a four-year term in January.
