GED tests measure competency in five subject areas: language arts- writing, social studies, science, language arts-reading and mathematics.

Congratulations to Parkland graduates
For the 45th consecutive year, Parkland College held commencement exercises this May, congratulating approximately 1,100 graduates and celebrating the start, or commencement, of their professional careers. Similar ceremonies were held on a smaller scale by various programs at Parkland such as nursing, respiratory therapy or adult education's General Education Development program.

The free event will provide a way for Western New York residents to explore and enroll in a local General Education Development program. Jackson Newsome is just like any other student at Marshall University with plenty of major life decisions to make and little time to make them. He lived in the dorms for a while. He has studied and worked hard for the past few years as he majored in both French and psychology. But theres something different about Newsome. At just 18, he is on his way out of Marshall as other students his age are just getting started on their college educations. He will graduate Dec. 10. Newsome went to South Charleston Middle School until he finished eighth grade and then was home schooled. His mother, Shonda Toler, pulled her son from public school because of his epilepsy, a condition he has had since childhood. After the September 2006 Crime Summit, the New Orleans City Council provided $220,000 to fund the Tulane Towers Learning Center, a literacy and General Education Development preparatory program for non-violent offenders and members of the community.

On Monday, four convicted criminals received a healthy dose of hope for a productive and crime-free future when they received their General Education Development diplomas. Roughly the equivalent of a high school diploma, the degree was awarded to four inmates in the Petersburg Jail system.
The program is a new offering under freshman Sheriff Vanessa Crawford, who was elected last November and started a four-year term in January.

Correctional education programs for incarcerated adults have been an object of much discussion. While such programs appear to be readily available to incarcerated individuals, little information is known about the instructional characteristics of such programs. The purpose of this survey was to describe the characteristics of instructional programs serving incarcerated adults with and without disabilities. The results indicated that standardized assessment tools were the predominant tools used to place students into academic programs and to monitor students' academic progress. Southwest Wisconsin Technical College officials recently announced approval by the Wisconsin Technical College System for a facilities lease to expand educational offerings in Richland Center.
The site is intended to provide adult basic education classes and other services such as assisting people in earning the General Education Development (GED) certificate and the High School Equivalency Diploma (HSED).
