The Eastern Washington General Office of the New York Life Insurance Co. has given Bill Hays its New Agent of the Month Award for July.

John Hayes, a former life-insurance agent and retired financial planner who had a passion for fishing, died Tuesday. He was 73.
Mr. Hayes was an ambitious and well-respected insurance agent for several local companies, such as Aetna, American General and Sun Life Insurance. After 40 years in the industry, he walked away to become an independent financial planner. His daughter, Patty Skerritt, said he loved the idea of being his own boss and making his own schedule, and the career change made him happier.

Mr. Raborn grew up in Hephzibah. He loved people and always had a positive attitude. He loved telling stories about growing up in Hephzibah and working at the Augusta Arsenal and at Augusta Dairies. Mr. Raborn was a veteran of the Korean Conflict and served both in the U.S. Army and Air Force. He retired after 41 years as an insurance agent having begun with Interstate Life and most recently representing American General. He was a faithful Christian and served as a Deacon and Elder at Cliffwood Presbyterian Church where he and his late wife of 57 years, Anne Taylor Raborn lead the Homebound Ministries.
