West Virginia is crisscrossed with pipelines ranging from big transmission lines that move huge quantities of natural gas from the Gulf Coast to the Northeast to small pipes that distribute gas to homes.
The state has 3,955 miles of transmission pipelines, 10,114 miles of distribution lines, 549 miles of gathering lines and 145 miles of hazardous liquid lines that carry petroleum products and natural gas liquids, according to the state Public Service Commission.

SAN BRUNO, Calif. - An ominous theme has emerged from the wreckage of a deadly pipeline explosion in California: There are thousands of pipes just like it nationwide.
Utilities have been under pressure for years to better inspect and replace aging gas pipes - many of them laid years before the suburbs expanded over them and now are at risk of leaking or erupting.

NEW HAVEN -- The Fire Department evacuated two homes in Fair Haven Wednesday, after thieves raiding the basement of a vacant home for metal pipes created a natural gas leak and raised the danger of an explosion.

Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania is getting ready to replace as many as 4,000 substandard pipes installed outside buildings statewide, the utility announced yesterday.
One of the state's largest gas utilities, Columbia installed pipes last year with walls that are too thin and an independent inspector found the pipes have a life span of 50 years -- half of what they should, spokesman Mike Marcus said. The company is planning to start site inspections soon to determine how many of the 4,000 sites have the pipe, he added.

Horizontal directional drilling (HDD) is a cost-effective alternative for the installation of polyethylene (PE) pipes under roads, rivers or urban areas. HDD is based on a two-stage process that begins with the drilling of a pilot hole which is then enlarged to accommodate PE pipes. Overstraining and over-stressing of the pipe can be reduced by joining sticks or coiled pipes using electrofusion couplers and utilizing drilling mud to minimize friction. Furthermore, the site for HDD should be inspected to determine the soil conditions and presence of subterranean structures.

Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania, one of the region's largest gas utilities, installed defective pipes outside thousands of buildings this year and will leave them in place until investigations determine their safety, a company spokesman said.
Columbia officials don't believe there is a cause for immediate concern, spokesman Mike Marcus said. Columbia Gas of Pennsylvania and its sister companies in Ohio, Maryland, Kentucky and Virginia installed the pipes as connectors between gas mains and about 28,300 buildings before a worker noticed the defect in late June, Marcus said.

Some 140,000 miles of steel and cast iron pipelines may have to be rehabilitated. The Gas Research Institute is studying the use of trenchless technologies to reduce the cost of rehabilitation. Modified slip lining is one form of trenchless technology that has been employed to rehabilitate steel and cast iron gas distribution pipes. This technique involves the mechanical reduction of the polyethylene liner's diameter prior to its insertion into the host pipe.
